21st century is called the century of biotechnology and each day brings new biotech products which has a huge impact on our lives. Brief overview will give given of sequencing technologies, stem cells and regenerative medicine, iPSC, optogenetics, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and ways to reverse the aging process at organismic level. Recent advancements in tissue engineering will be presented in more detail. Tissues or organ damage/failure are major health problems worldwide. Along with morbidity and mortality there is huge cost associated with these types of health care services. There are several treatments options like transplantation, artificial prostheses, mechanical devices, surgery, drug therapy and stem cells therapy. If there is major damage to tissue or organ, there procedure do not provide long term recovery and cure. Tissue engineering is a solution as in this case a natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic tissue or organ can be implanted to restore the function. The de-cellularization and re-cellularization process can be an effective way to produce tissues and organs in lab and can save millions of lives in future.
Aftab Ahmad completed his BSc (Hons) in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics with distinction from University of the Punjab, PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from same university and Post Doc in Tissue Engineering from NAIST, Japan. His initial work was related to recombinant vaccine production which later shifted to stem cells research and currently he is working in area of stem cell therapy, tissue engineering and aging. Aftab has served as President of Sciforum Pakistan from 2006-10. He is also founder and President of Asia’s first National Young Academy entitled “National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS). NAYS is connected to more than 50,000 young scientists of Pakistan and working on 20 programs to promote science and technology. He is also member of Global Young Academy (GYA) and young scientist member of World Economic Forum (WEF). In addition, Aftab is also Chairman of Islamic World Young Scientists Academy (IYSA), Fellow; Global Healthspan Institute, USA, Director; Innovators Club and National Director of Global Union of Scientists for Peace. Aftab Ahmad is founder of Pakistan Stem Cell Society (PSCS) and Pakistan Aging Research Society (PARS). He has won many national and international awards. Aftab has published over 50 research articles and also 4 books in local language for public awareness.
